4. Tree 2, Small-leaved Lime by Churchyard Steps, St James’ Church
To consider further advice received from J. P. Ross, Arboricultural Consultant, following further investigations to Tree 2.
Advice is printed below for residents’ information.
It has very recently been discovered that this important veteran tree is in a much more dangerous state than previously realised, with now a high risk of large branches breaking off and causing damage to people and property. Following advice from the expert arboricultural consultant, so as to avoid risk to public safety and to try to save the tree it is now recommended that the tree be re-pollarded, removing all of its major branches down to their origins at the top of the trunk.
The reports advise that this tree species (Small-leaved Lime) generally tolerates pruning and pollarding quite well, it is to be hoped that following pollarding it will re-shoot and regrow a new crown, which is believed to have happened in the past. This will never be comparable to its present form, but it will at least mean that the tree should remain as a living entity, hopefully for many years to come.
